What should I revise for English 1AC semester 2?

Use this pathway to revise after-school activities, likes, time, jobs, weather and the difference between routines and actions now. Complete the reading, language and writing tasks first, then use the correction to choose a topic that needs more work. Follow your teacher's sequence if your textbook differs.

Organise revision by skill and meaning

For routines and jobs, use the present simple: She works at a school. Ask Where does she work? Keep work without s after does. Use It's with weather adjectives and at with clock times. For an action now, use be + ing: She is reading.

Organise revision by mistakes rather than unit numbers alone. If questions are difficult, compare do/does with is/are. If reading is difficult, find the exact supporting phrase. If writing is difficult, plan a beginning, two details and an ending, then check one sentence at a time.

Read and explain this example

It is Saturday and the weather is sunny but cool. Amal's mother works in a bookshop. She starts at nine. Amal doesn't go to school on Saturday. She usually reads in the morning. Today she is making a card for her mother. Her mother likes books and flowers, so Amal draws both on the card.

Distinguish usually from today's activity

A revision text can use more than one tense for a reason. Amal usually reads in the morning is a routine, while today she is making a card describes this day's activity. Her mother's job takes another present-simple sentence: She works in a bookshop. Underlining all the verbs is a start, but labelling what each one means is more useful. When you correct a sentence, keep the intended meaning as well as repairing its form.

Girls illustrate two grammar corrections: Where does she works becomes Where does she work; She do not like books becomes She does not like books. Incorrect sentences are marked with a red cross.

Remember

Usually reads is a routine; is making describes today’s activity. Do not treat every verb in the text as the same tense. Choose a revision lesson from the meaning of your mistake.

Step by step

Put the idea into practice

  1. Find evidence for each reading answer before opening the correction.
  2. Label a grammar sentence as a routine, current action or description.
  3. Write a short special-day paragraph and check the required details.
