Communication: how do you introduce yourself?

Definition

Introduction : An introduction gives basic information: My name is Sami. I am fourteen. I am from Oujda. These sentences answer questions about a name, an age and an origin.

On a first day, a short conversation is enough. Greet your classmate, give your name and ask one question. Listen to the reply before asking the next question. Use Good morning with a teacher in the morning, Hello with a classmate and Goodbye when leaving.

QuestionExample answer
What is your name?My name is Sami.
How old are you?I am fourteen.
Where are you from?I am from Oujda.
How are you?I am fine, thank you.

Two schoolboys meet

Sami: Hello. My name is Sami. What is your name? Adam: I am Adam. Sami: How old are you? Adam: I am fifteen. Sami: Nice to meet you. Adam: Nice to meet you, too.

Two Moroccan schoolboys introduce themselves; a third panel shows the two classmates together. English 3AC Unit 1.
Use be for names, ages and origins: I am Sami, he is Adam, and we are classmates.

Vocabulary: country or nationality?

A country is a place, such as Morocco. A nationality describes origin, such as Moroccan. Use a country after from: I am from Morocco. Use a nationality after be: I am Moroccan. Country and nationality names begin with capital letters.

Grammar: subject pronouns and am, is, are

Definition

Subject pronoun : A subject pronoun replaces a name or noun: Adam is a pupil becomes He is a pupil. The notebooks are blue becomes They are blue.

SubjectBeShort form
IamI'm
YouareYou're
He / She / ItisHe's / She's / It's
We / TheyareWe're / They're

We includes the speaker: Sami and I are pupils becomes We are pupils. They describes other people or several things. You may address one listener or several listeners; it always takes are. Choose be from the subject, not from a noun appearing later in the sentence.

Step by step

Fill a be gap

  1. Identify the subject.
  2. Replace a name with a pronoun if helpful.
  3. Choose am for I, is for he/she/it and are for you/we/they.
  4. Read the complete sentence to check the meaning.

Remember

Use be for age: I am fourteen, not I have fourteen. Keep capital I even in the middle of a sentence.

Grammar: a or an?

Use a/an before a singular countable noun when introducing it: a pupil, an apple. Listen to the first sound of the next word. An English teacher begins with a vowel sound. A university begins with a consonant sound, like you. Do not use a/an with plural notebooks.

Choose by sound

An orange bag; a blue bag; an English lesson; a university.

  1. The next word, including an adjective if present, determines the sound.
  2. This is a sound rule, not simply a rule about written vowel letters.
Four objects demonstrate a/an: an apple, an umbrella, a book and a uniform. English 3AC Unit 1.
Choose a or an by the first sound: an apple and an umbrella, but a book and a uniform.

Study skills: remember a useful phrase

Say the letters of an invented name: S-A-M-I. Write new words in phrases, such as a pupil or I am from Morocco. Cover the phrase tomorrow and try to recall it before checking. Mark the phrases you cannot yet remember and practise those first.

Skills work: reading Sami’s profile

My name is Sami El Amrani. I am fourteen years old. I am from Oujda, and I am Moroccan. I am a pupil at Atlas Middle School. My favourite colour is green. My schoolbag is grey. I am ready for our English club meeting.

Read once for the main idea, then locate an age, a city and two colours. Green describes a preference; grey describes the bag. A comprehension answer should keep these details separate.

Skills work: listening and speaking

A partner reads twice while you look away: “Hello. I am Adam. I am fifteen. I am from Berkane. My bag is blue.” Write the name, age, origin and bag colour. Then practise the introduction with a classmate of the same gender. This is a live reading script, not a supplied audio recording.

Writing and cultural studies: a respectful introduction

Write four to six sentences about an invented pupil. Include name, age, city, nationality and one school detail. Check capitals, be and full stops. In a classroom conversation, be polite and accept invented details. Practising English does not require sharing private information.

Review: your first conversation

  • Introduce an invented pupil in three sentences.
  • Explain why I takes am and notebooks takes are.
  • Choose the article in an orange bag.
  • Ask an age question and listen for the exact answer.
