How do I find practical information on a club web page?

Scan for the day, time, place, age range and things to bring. Check each answer against the notice. The sample club meets on Saturday from ten to eleven at the school playground, welcomes beginners aged eleven to thirteen, and asks visitors to bring water and a hat.

Scan a notice for a specific detail

Scan means move your eyes through a text to find one detail, such as a day or a number. Can may describe an ability or permission. You can join here tells the reader who is allowed to take part; I can swim describes a skill.

Match each question to its key information. When asks for time, where asks for a place, and what asks for an activity or object. Do not infer that a beginner must already be an expert. A notice that welcomes beginners allows people who are still learning.

Read and explain this example

SATURDAY SKILLS CLUB: Meet at the school playground from ten to eleven on Saturday. Beginners aged eleven to thirteen can join. You can ride a bike or fly a kite. Bring water and a hat. Bikes and kites are available at the club. Ask Ms Amrani before your first visit. The club does not meet on rainy days.

Check a condition before deciding who can join

A notice can describe both an activity and the conditions for taking part. You can ride a bike names an available activity; beginners can join describes who is welcome. Do not confuse the two. A twelve-year-old beginner fits this notice's age range even if they are still learning. The text also says equipment is available, so it does not support a claim that every visitor must buy a bicycle before joining.

Remember

This is an invented reading text, not a real club announcement. Available means that an item can be used; the text does not say you must buy a bike.

Step by step

Put the idea into practice

  1. Find the heading and identify what the page is advertising.
  2. Look for the exact detail requested by each question.
  3. Read a condition together with its exception, such as the note about rainy days.
