Listening: joining a school club
Listen to two pupils discussing a reading club. Focus on three details: the meeting day, the place and the things to bring. This guided beginner task reuses an existing MATHFJIB recording with simpler comprehension questions and vocabulary help.

Listen to the text
Listen before opening the transcript. This original English practice text is read by a synthetic voice.
Show the transcript
Sami: Hi Adam. Are you joining the reading club this year? Adam: I want to, but I have football practice on Tuesdays. Sami: The reading club meets on Thursdays, after lunch. Adam: That sounds good. Where do you meet? Sami: In the library, next to the science room. We read short stories and talk about our favourite characters. Adam: Do I need to buy a book? Sami: No. The school lends us books. Bring a notebook and a pencil. Adam: Great. I will ask the teacher about joining tomorrow.
How do I find the day, place and materials in a school-club dialogue?
Listen once for the situation, then listen again with three note headings: day, place and materials. Keep each detail with the correct activity. In this dialogue, Tuesday belongs to football practice, while the reading club meets on Thursday in the library.

Listen for a purpose, not every word
You do not need to understand every word to find a specific detail. On the first listen, identify the topic. On the second, note the day, place and objects. Open the full transcript after your first attempt and use it to check what you heard.
Useful phrases are meets on Thursdays, in the library, next to the science room and bring a notebook and a pencil. Do not swap football practice on Tuesday with the reading club on Thursday. Lends means lets someone use something and return it later. The final line I will ask refers to a later action; you do not need to master that form for this listening task.

| Listen for | Useful phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| When? | on Thursdays | the reading club day |

Prepare a three-column listening note

Read and explain this example
Before listening, write three headings: DAY, PLACE, MATERIALS. Leave space under each. Play the audio once without pausing. Play it again and complete your notes. Only then open the transcript and underline the words that confirm your answers.
Separate nearby facts that belong to different activities
A familiar number or day can feel like the answer as soon as you hear it. Wait for the surrounding words. The first day mentioned may describe why a pupil cannot attend another activity. On your second listen, write the activity beside its day rather than making one unlabelled list. If a phrase remains difficult, use the transcript and replay that part. The goal is accurate understanding, not avoiding an accessibility aid.

Remember
The recording uses a synthetic English voice and is shared with another MATHFJIB course. These questions are adapted for 1AC. Use the full transcript if a sound or phrase is difficult; it is an access aid, not a score penalty.
Step by step
